viv nicklin
textile artist
viv nicklin creates hand stitched, one off pieces using natural fabrics and papers.
Ideas and inspiration for my work come from everyday life around me. Drawings are usually the starting point for my very personal contemporary stitched pieces. Working with emulsion paints to give a chalky surface, and pastels, I use delicate papers and natural fabrics for textured backgrounds. Stitches are used to develop shape, colour and surface interest, and I particularly like the repetition of the same simple stitch to create line, pattern and areas of dense colour. The wonderful beach, shoreline, weather, and domestic objects inform my work, and a recent trip to Menorca has also inspired new images which I am currently working on.
My studio is located in West Wittering, West Sussex.
A selection of work is available to buy and view on request.
Living and working in Birdham, Chichester, I take idea and inspiration from everyday life around me, in particular the wonderful coastline to create my very personal drawings, oil pastels and contemporary hand stitched textile pieces. I begin with mark making studies, drawings and photographs. As I am intrigued by the idea of changing the surface of cloth or paper by stitching into it much of my work is stitch textile based.
ART WITTERING 2020
Due to the current uncertainty, and social distancing regulations, we have
come to the conclusion it is not possible to go ahead with our annual
exhibition showing our work in the way we would like to.
This is a shame as we were looking forward to welcoming you all to our
10th Exhibition.
All participating artists in the group are still working in their studios and
we are hopeful that we will be able to make plans for an exhibition in 2021.
In the meantime you can find us on Facebook at Art Wittering
with very best wishes
Viv
