ABOUT VIV NICKLIN
Slowly stitching by hand is a wonderful antidote to today's hectic, hi-tech world where results are desired instantly, and response times are fast and furious.
Exploring feelings of peace and calm in an often overcrowded world I use threads and stitches as evidence of time taken for quiet reflection.
I like the repetition of the same simple stitch to build up texture and areas of dense colour and interest. Making something by hand rather than relying on a machine is very appealing. Every one of my pieces is a one off and cannot be reproduced, although I do like to work extensively on a theme, for example 'The Beach' resulting in a series of similar pieces.
Background
Inspiration
Studying Textile Design in the early 1970’s at the then Manchester College of Art, has imbued me with a lifelong love of textiles, threads and surface pattern.
I have exhibited in Cheshire where I ran an Interior Design business for some 18 years. My work has been exhibited at Oxmarket Centre of Arts, and Pallant House Gallery in Chichester, and I have taken part in the Chichester Art Trail many times. I also exhibit at West Wittering Memorial Hall with the Autumn Affordable Art Group.
